With its traditional, unspoiled country towns, carefully tended olive groves, and terraced vineyards, Matarraña (Matarranya in Catalan) is often compared to Tuscany. Yet unlike its Italian counterpart, this remote corner of Aragon remains largely undiscovered by international travellers.
Located in the province of Teruel in eastern Aragon, the Matarraña district is threaded with a labyrinth of dirt trails that wind through an area where small‑scale fruit farming continues much as it has for generations. Seemingly untouched by time, Matarraña offers outstanding riding and a spectacular window into traditional Spain.
Matarraña borders the districts of Terra Alta, Els Ports and Bajo Aragón. Terra Alta, known for its acclaimed wine production, charming country towns and villages, and its connection to Picasso, is picture‑perfect Spanish countryside. Els Ports Natural Park, by contrast, is a rugged mountain landscape with almost no human inhabitants — a place where you’re more likely to spot Spanish ibex, red squirrels, eagles, and, if they don’t hear us coming, the occasional wild boar.
Bajo Aragón, to the west of Matarraña, is home to MotorLand, the MotoGP racing circuit. The surrounding dirt trails also host the annual Baja España, one of the biggest off‑road events in the country.
